Love Island town destroyed as horror flash flood kills nine in Majorca

The Majorcan town where Love Island is filmed has been completely destroyed in flash floods that have claimed nine lives so far.

The death toll is expected to rise after seven inches of rain fell in two hours overnight in Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, washing cars out to sea with people still trapped inside.

Describing the devastating scenes in the town – where the Islanders’ much-loved supermarket and beauty salon are situated – one survivor said: “We were at home when the river burst its banks and began to take the cars away.

“The water was coming through the windows and the doors.”

Each year the Islanders are filmed exploring the pretty cobbled streets of the town, with this year’s winners Jack Fincham and Dani Dyer stocking up on supplies at the supermarket that was last night submerged beneath up to 13 feet of water.

Dani also enjoyed an ice-breaking drink at a sun-drenched bar with love rival Ellie Jones, and in the 2015 series, the girls hit the town to get some glam gear ahead of the final.

But all those locations are believed to have been left devastated by the disaster.

“The water was piling cars up on top of each other," another survivor said of the terrifying scenes.

“I had to swim to survive. I have seen cars go past me with people inside."

A British couple died in a taxi that was swept away when a nearby river bust its banks at around 8pm on Tuesday. The driver is still said to be missing.

Shocking pictures show vehicles being swept through city streets and homes submerged in water as residents hold onto rooftops, in what some have described as ‘biblical scenes’.

Firefighters rushed to the town to save people including those who were trapped in cars.

Some were even reported to have been washed out to sea in nearby Arta on the eastern side of the island.

According to emergency services, the first victim was an elderly man with reduced mobility who was found in the basement of his house.

A second person died after getting caught by the flood on the road that connects Canyamel and Artà.

On Wednesday morning, emergency services confirmed two more deaths, a woman who was found in her house in Sant Llorenç and a victim in S’Illot.

The former mayor of Artà, Rafael Gili, 71, also drowned in the floods.

More information is to come on the sixth victim.

The new victims are two men found in the areas of Arta and s’Illot on the coast.

The ninth victim is thought to be a van driver called Biel Mesquida Salas who was last seen driving a van in an area near the town of Sant Llorenc des Cardassar called Son Vives.

Locals said the town remained virtually cut-off this morning and could only be reached by foot. Schools in the areas suspended classes because of power cuts.

Rancina Armengol, President of the Balearic Islands which includes Majorca, confirmed today her government would declare three days of mourning.
