AceShowbiz -The latest movies by Pedro Almodovar and Terrence Malick will compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
Almodovar’s “Pain & Glory“, which stars Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, will have its world premiere as part of the official competition of the French festival, which will open with Jim Jarmusch’s star-studded zombie comedy-thriller “The Dead Don’t Die, another competition film, on 14 May.
Malick’s historical drama “A Hidden Life“, which had been previously known as “Radegund”, was also unveiled as a title on the competition line-up on Thursday, April 18, alongside “Sorry We Missed You” by Ken Loach, Young Ahmed by the Dardenne Brothers, and Matthias and Maxime by Xavier Dolan, which the director himself stars in.
The competition line-up also features four female directors, the most in recent years, with titles like “Little Joe” by Jessica Hausner and Portrait of a Lady on Fire by Celine Sciamma.
The films, including Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” and Ira Sachs’ Frankie, will be judged by Jury President, Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Members of his jury are yet to be named.
The line-up announcement also confirmed reports that Elton John biopic “Rocketman“, directed by Dexter Fletcher and starring Taron Egerton, will have its world premiere out of competition at the festival.
Asif Kapadia, who won a Best Documentary Oscar for “Amy“, his film on Amy Winehouse, will also premiere his documentary “Maradona“, about Argentinian soccer star Diego Maradona, while Drive’s Nicolas Winding Refn will screen two episodes of his Amazon Prime Video TV series “Too Old to Die Young“, starring Miles Teller and Jena Malone.
Film experts had been expecting Quentin Tarantino‘s highly-anticipated movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” to appear in the line-up, but festival boss Thierry Fremaux explained that it was still in post-production. However, it could be a last-minute addition if it’s finished in time.
The 72nd annual Cannes Film Festival runs from 14 to 25 May.
