Marvel announced it would be turning some of its beloved comics into movies over a decade ago. Considering how huge their following is, saying fans were excited is an understatement! Since then Marvel lovers have been placing bets on which of their favorite superheroes they could catch on screen and when! It all started with the Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr., which was released way back in May 2008.
The most recent addition was Captain Marvel, which was released just this month on March 8th. The film was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck and starred the super talented Brie Larson in the titular role. While both films, and all of the ones in between, have brought droves to the theaters, some have certainly faired better than others! Let’s take a look at which Marvel movies topped the box office charts!
5. ‘Iron Man 3’
The third installment of the Iron Man franchise comes in at No.5. Just for comparisons sake, Iron Man ranks No.10 and Iron Man 2 ranks No.12. It looks like the third time was a charm for the superhero that kicked off Marvel’s rolling releases!
According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed $409 million, $174.1 million during its opening weekend. It legitimately blew the competition out the water, stealing the top spot by a landslide. The second highest grossing film was Pain and Gain, which only took home $7.5 million, not even a fraction of the popular Marvel flick. On a global scale, the film pulled in a whopping $805 million putting its worldwide gross in the billions!
4. ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’
Avengers: Age of Ultron, the sequel to Marvel’s The Avengers, ranks No.4 on the list. The sequel was announced the same year the original film debuted so fans knew they could count on Marvel to bring Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, back to the big screen. Instead of facing off against Loki, the crew found themselves head to head with Ultron.
The arc must have really got fans going as the film brought in $459 million; $191.2 million during its opening weekend. Avengers: AoU, just like Iron Man 3, did terrific at the foreign box office. How amazing? $946.3 million pushed the film to almost $1.5 billion on a global scale. Just like No.5 on the list, the movie stole the top rank blowing Furious 7’s $6.6 million out of the water.
3. ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’
The sequel isn’t the only one to make the cut! Unlike the Iron Man franchise, the first Avengers film to hit theaters beat out its successor. Marvel’s The Avengers grossed $623.3 million and made $207.4 million during its opening weekend alone. The film also made $895.4 million outside of the United States putting it’s worldwide gross above #1.5 billion. While the film may be No.3 on a domestic scale, it’s actually the top earner globally among the films covered so far!
Keeping with the trend, Marvel’s The Avengers also ranked No.1 during opening weekend — no contest. Think Like a Man didn’t have a chance with its $8.1 weekend gross.
2. ‘Avengers: Infinity War’
Surprise, surprise. Another Avengers film makes the list, this time stealing the coveted second spot! Avengers: Infinity War was released during Marvel’s phase three rollout last year. This time the iconic team joins up with the Guardians of the Galaxy crew to go face to face with Thanos. The film wasn’t just a “trequel,” it tied in with the happenings in some of the other films as well!
So how did the movie do at the box office? Avengers: IW grossed $678.8 million and raked in $257.6 million during opening weekend. What’s even more impressive is that it broke the billions in the foreign market! The movie pulled in an impressive $1.37 billion pushing its lifetime gross to over $2 billion. While we are looking at the domestic for this ranking, it’s clear the third installment in the Avengers franchise is the clear winner globally!
1. ‘Black Panther’
Drum roll, please! Black Panther takes the No.1 spot due to its insane A-list lineup and its predominantly black cast. Comic fans came out in droves to see the film that would chronicle superheroes who hadn’t made it the big screen. Black comic book fans celebrated on a global scale as a lineup like this was the first of its kind! For Hollywood to pick a 90% black cast was pretty much unheard of…needless to say the hype was real. Not just real, but warranted!
Black Panther takes home the crown with an astounding $700 million. It brought in $202 million during its opening weekend and like all the films before it made the top spot that weekend with no problems. Second up was Peter Rabbit with $17.5 million. How did it do on a foreign scale? Well, not as well as the latest Avengers installment. It only brought in $646.8 million resulting in a $1.3 billion paycheck worldwide. So while it may be top dog on American soil, Avengers: Infinity War alsodeserves a crown for beating out the competition on a global scale!
