WHAT BOOK would Bonnie Wright take to a desert island?

WHAT BOOK would Harry Potter actress, director Bonnie Wright and author take to a desert island?

  • Bonnie Wright is currently reading The Old Ways by Robert Macfarlane
  • She would take Mrs Armitage On Wheels by Quentin Blake to a desert island
  • The actress and author caught the reading bug from The Great Gatsby

. . . are you reading now?

The Old Ways by Robert Macfarlane. I am a huge fan of his books Underland and Landmarks. This one is all about a walking expedition he takes following ancient trails, tracks and sea paths through England. His writing always makes you feel like you are stepping back in time, or as though time is standing still. The theme of deep time in the book echoes how I think we should approach the climate movement: we have to be in it for long-term results we may never see — but we must show up and give that level of commitment.

. . . would you take to a desert island?

Mrs Armitage On Wheels by Quentin Blake. As a child, it was the book I used to ask my parents to read to me at bedtime. It’s packed with the creative, resourceful and humorous ideas the heroine has while on a bicycle ride with her dog. I was introduced to Quentin Blake through his brilliant illustrations in the Roald Dahl books. If I could, I’d take some of Dahl’s books with me, too.

. . . first gave you the reading bug?

The Great Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio in the film, pictured). We were reading it at school when I was about 13. I had always struggled with reading and essay-writing, but this story completely captivated me. From that moment on I had a love of books and writing, all encouraged by my favourite teacher, Nora Evans.

. . . left you cold?

I never really loved Jack Kerouac’s On The Road. I tried to get into it but it just wasn’t for me. I have to admit that if I’m not engrossed in a book, I will quickly stop reading it. I want to love what I read and use my time wisely.
