Kate Garraway has opened up about an amazing gesture she received from football legend David Beckham during her husband Derek Draper’s health struggles. It comes as the Good Morning Britain host spoke candidly about her other half’s “desperate” plea before he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being diagnosed with coronavirus.
The 53-year-old revealed that David had sent personal videos to her children as her husband Derek battled to survive in hospital.
The mum-of-two said the former footballer recorded messages of encouragement for Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, last year.
Kate recalled: “I hadn’t had the chance to look at social media so it was Darcey and Billy who spotted it and squealed with delight.
“I messaged him back, thanking him and saying the kids were thrilled.”
She continued: “He sent a personal video to each of them – words of encouragement and fun. He said he’d been thinking of his own kids and how they might feel.”
David’s sweet gesture was revealed in the presenter’s new book Kate Garraway: The Power Of Hope, which is being serialised by the Mail On Sunday.
The broadcaster explained that the message from the footballer came after her partner pleaded with her about his health woes.
The ITV favourite revealed Derek’s text messages had become increasingly desperate as his health began to take a turn for the worse.
Kate penned: “His messages became more and more desperate.
“‘I don’t think you realise how bad it is,’ he wrote one evening. ‘It is unimaginable. I literally feel like I’m drowning and every breath is my last. Please tell them both I love them. The doctor says there’s no chance of me dying. I just have to keep going.'”
Derek remained in hospital for over a year and is believed to be one of the UK’s longest-suffering patients.
Kate recently gave viewers on GMB an update on her partner’s recovery as the former political advisor returned home earlier this month.

Speaking on GMB to her co-stars Susanna Reid and Adil Ray, the presenter shared the news of his progress.
Kate began: “It’s been wonderful having Derek home.
“There’s been lots of little positives, whether it’s helping his cognition being at home or whether it’s because I’m there to see the little things.
“I couldn’t go [into the hospital] before and we were on FaceTime. I don’t know but it feels positive.”
She explained that her other half’s speech is currently limited as the virus severely impacted his body, but he has made small steps towards recovery.
The broadcaster went on to reveal Derek uttered a few words to her but it was his recognition which left her “amazed” by his progress.
“I walked in the other morning… and he said, ‘New dress?’, which was just amazing.
“And it was, actually!”
