Is Britain falling out of love with Love Island? Viewing figures for launch of summer series plunge by more than 50% on last year with 1.54m tuning in – as fans brand show ‘boring’ and slam tired format
- The audience peaked at 1.54m compared to 3m for last year’s summer series
The viewing figures for last night’s launch episode of Love Island were 50 per cent down on the 2022 opening show – with fans blasting it for being boring.
On Monday evening, the ITV2 dating show returned to its tenth series with ten new Islanders arriving at the villa in Mallorca.
However, viewers appear to have grown tired of the format, with some television insiders blaming the ‘greed’ of the network wanting to squeeze a winter version just four months ago.
Mail Online has learned that the audience peaked at 1.54 million compared to 3 million for last year’s summer series, and 2.9 million the year before.
The average figure also dropped by almost half, with the 2023 total being 1.3 million compared to 2.4 million in 2022.
Some viewers admitted to being very confused during the first episode as they had no idea they could vote
Maya Jama, who replaced Laura Whitmore for the winter series which started in January, has been a hit with fans
In its opening night back in January, the first show opened to an average of 1.4 million viewers – so 100,000 more than last night.
But perhaps more worryingly for ITV bosses, the audience figure went down as low as 1 million, meaning that 500,000 people switched off.
The numbers dropped through the show from 1.54 million, to 1.52 million, then 1.5 million, 1.46 million, 1.23 million before reaching its lowest point of 1 million.
Fans took to social media to share how they think the series, where contestants can no longer drink alcohol, as ‘boring.’
One user said: ‘The hype is gone. That’s what happens when you make a frequent copy every single season. The same format. The same twists, at the exact same time each season. The same type of people being cast. It’s boring now – there’s so much they could do, but they don’t. #LoveIsland’
Another wrote: ‘Love island too boring man 95% of it is just meaningless conversation.’
The programme has also been criticised for having less ‘beautiful’ people in it.

Throughout the show, Maya wowed in a total of three stunning looks as she welcomed the cast to another sun-soaked series
The stunner, 28 looked incredible as she made her grand entrance by arriving to the villa on a yacht, before slipping into two more figure-hugging frocks
Love Island bosses were hit with race accusations after just one episode when viewers claimed that the islanders were paired up according to their race.
Maya presided over the first coupling up of the series, which this year saw the public vote on who should be paired.
The first couples for this series are Ella Thomas and Tyrqiue Hyde; Ruchee Gurun and Medhi Edno; Andre Furtado and Catherine Agbaje; Mitchel Taylor and Molly Marsh and Jess Harding and George Fensom.
However, there was some confusion for those watching at home because they were not aware that they were to vote for who is coupled with who.
