Sir Elton John’s husband David Furnish celebrates 7 years of sobriety

Sir Elton John’s husband David Furnish has proudly marked seven years of sobriety and admits going to rehab was the ‘best decision’ of his life.

David, 58, battled alcoholism while struggling to deal with his famous partner’s stardom and the loneliness he felt while Sir Elton was away for long periods of time on tour.

In his latest Instagram post, David posted a photo of a balloon with ‘I am 7 today!’ on the front.

He wrote: ‘Can’t believe it’s been 7 years.

‘Deepest thanks to all the people who have inspired and supported me on my journey through recovery. Without a doubt, the best decision I have ever made in my life. ???? #OneDayAtATime #Serenity #Fellowship #Gratitude #Service.’

David Beckham, who is a close friend of the couple, supported David and left three red heart emoji under the post.

‘Congratulations to you… such an achievement…you must feel so good!’ another follower cheered.

Another supportive follower said: ‘Amazing!! You may have been inspired and been supported but all gratitude goes to you as you made it happen ❤️.’

Sir Elton, 73, detailed his husband’s sobriety battle in his 2019 autobiography Me, Elton John.

The Candle In The Wind singer recalled coming home to seeing empty wine bottles and revealed he once found David passed out over his computer.

David eventually checked into a rehab clinic in Malibu, California after realising he needed to seek help for his alcoholism.

Sir Elton wrote in his memoir: ‘I always thought David had slipped into Elton John World with remarkable ease and confidence, but it turned out that a lot of things I was completely used to living with, that I just saw as a fact of life, made him completely anxious.

‘He didn’t like being photographed all the time, or beg under press scrutiny, or public speaking at [Elton John] Aids Foundation events.’

In July 2020, Sir Elton himself celebrated 30 years of sobriety after kicking his addiction to drink and drugs.

At the time, the musician told his Instagram followers in a heartfelt post: ‘Reflecting on the most magical day having celebrated my 30th Sobriety Birthday.

‘So many lovely cards, flowers and chips from my sons, [husband] David, friends in the Program, staff at the office and in our homes. I’m truly a blessed man. If I hadn’t finally taken the big step of asking for help 30 years ago, I’d be dead.

‘Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all the people who have inspired and supported me along the way.’

Sir Elton and David have been together since 1993 and entered a civil partnership in 2005 before marrying in 2014 when gay marriage became legal.

They share two sons; Zachary, 10, and Elijah, eight.
