'Star Wars': Why Carrie Fisher Said She 'Belonged' To Harrison Ford

Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford shared more than just on-screen kisses in Star Wars. Behind the scenes, they had a short-lived affair while filming the first movie. And because Fisher was much younger and a lot more inexperienced than Ford, she took the relationship a lot more seriously than her co-star.

Although Ford was married, he took the initiative to start a physical relationship with Fisher. And ever since that first move, Fisher felt as though she “belonged” to Ford.

Carrie Fisher never expected to have an affair with Harrison Ford

Although Fisher admitted that she was interested in having a behind the scenes romance while working on Star Wars, she never expected it to be with Ford. He was a married man at the time, and he was fifteen years older than her. Plus, she never expected Harrison to be interested in her.

From Fisher’s perspective, she felt as though her co-star was totally out of her league.

“He was just so far out of my league,” she wrote in her memoir, The Princess Diarist. “Compared to him, I didn’t even have an actual verifiable league. We were destined for different places.”

She continued, humorously saying, “If Harrison and I went to prom together, no one would believe it. ‘What’s he doing with her?’ Captain of the football team and president of the cool literary club? What’s he doing with cutie-pie sweetcheeks, with the troll doll collection and Cary Grant obsession? Must be a glitch in the machine…”

Carrie Fisher felt as though she ‘belonged’ to Harrison Ford

Although Ford was married to someone else, she still felt like she belonged to him.

“His island was already inhabited,” she said, referring to the fact that he was married, “and here I was, a teenaged trespasser. All I had to do was make the most of being adrift.”

She continued, saying, “I looked at him with a minimal amount of expectancy. He looked over at me, and I had to look away. I didn’t want him to see that ‘I belonged to him’- It was bad enough that I knew it,” she wrote. “I didn’t want him to know it, too.”

Fisher went on, saying she “gave” herself to Ford.

“I kept it from myself for almost two months now, calling it everything from physical to a big mistake. Not that it wasn’t those things, it was, but when I ‘gave myself to him’ – I gave myself for a while, not just for a good time.”

Carrie Fisher still longed for Harrison Ford 40 years later, after filming ‘Star Wars’

In Fisher’s memoir, The Princess Diarist, she writes about how she would be willing to give her relationship with Ford another shot.

In a Heartbreaking passage, she writes,

“So while there’s still time for Carrison to grow old together, that gateway is steadily closing. If we’re going to get back together, we’re going to have to do it soon. And getting back together with someone you were never truly with is, to say the least, complicated. But absolutely worth the effort. Or not. I’ll probably regret writing this, but if you have the impulse to yell at me, please don’t. Periodically, I feel guilty enough on my own. My hopes aren’t high, and neither, as it happens, am I.”
