Bohemian Rhapsody's "incredible" Rami Malek deserves an Oscar nomination, according to Queen legend Brian May

Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has done immensely well at the box office, but people are hugely divided on its quality. Some people think it’s boring, too fluffy, and a poor portrayal of homosexuality. Others love that it reinforces what a great band the ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ hitmakers are.

One thing everyone can agree on, however, is Rami Malek’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury. The Mr Robot actor received widespread praise for his voice, mannerisms and charisma as the iconic frontman.

Could it be an Oscar winning performance? Queen guitarist Brian May thinks so.

Speaking to the Press Association (via RTÉ), May said: “He’s incredible as well, without doubt he’ll be on the nominations list for an Oscar and well deserved as well.

“He inhabited Freddie to the point where we even started to think of him as Freddie. Really remarkable.”

Regarding the success of the film, he added: “We’ve lived with this project for nine years and it’s incredible to see it doing so well. It came out to shitty reviews, as some of our work has before, but the public has embraced it magnificently.

“Everybody gave 200%, from the actors and technicians to the production team and hair and make up, everyone. You don’t get any lukewarm responses.”

May also spoke highly of Gwilym Lee, who plays him in the film, saying that he “should be getting awards all over”.

Bohemian Rhapsody is out now in the UK and the US.
