Following the devastating ending of Avengers: Infinity War, a lot is riding on the arrival of Captain Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
She’s been teased as the most powerful MCU character to date and, as such, fans have long suspected that she’ll be the key to defeating Thanos in Avengers 4. We know that Captain Marvel will be appearing in the highly anticipated sequel as the Russo Brothers confirmed earlier this year that Brie Larson had shot scenes on Avengers 4, even before she filmed her solo movie.
But could it all be a ruse on Marvel’s part, meaning Captain Marvel won’t actually be playing a major role in Avengers 4?
A new theory from Reddit user ChovvyChofChop offers a bleak fate for Captain Marvel at the end of her upcoming solo movie. They suggest that, much like the mid-credits scene of Ant-Man and The Wasp, Captain Marvel will become a victim of Thanos and his Infinity Snap shortly after receiving Nick Fury’s distress message in a post-credits scene.
It certainly would be a dark way to end the movie and it’s likely that if Captain Marvel‘s post-credits scenes link to any movie, it would be Avengers 4. However, would Marvel really pull off the same trick in two consecutive movies? If anything, it’d be more unexpected if the credits scenes didn’t feature any nod to Avengers 4.
However, with Avengers 4 likely to mark the final MCU appearance for both Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr as Captain America and Iron Man, it could make sense that Captain Marvel isn’t the one to save the day. The film needs to set up the future of the MCU and Captain Marvel will be central to that – even if Larson hasn’t signed up to seven movies – but that doesn’t mean she can’t allow the original Avengers one final moment in the spotlight.
Filming photos certainly hint at bigger parts for Iron Man and Cap than for Captain Marvel, so whether she’s dusted by Thanos or not, there’s a strong possibility that she might not be in the whole movie.
Instead, it could be that she’ll turn out to be the final crucial ingredient in the fight against Thanos, making her entrance after the Avengers had done all the timey-wimey stuff to reset the Snap and bring back their fallen heroes. After all, with Nick Fury a pile of dust at the moment, the remaining Avengers might not be even aware that Captain Marvel exists, so she’ll have to search them out.
And if the Avengers are spending a lot of time in the past in Avengers 4, it would risk seriously messing up the timeline if Captain Marvel popped up to help in the Battle of New York, so a third-act arrival sounds plausible.
Of course, until we see Captain Marvel, this is all just guesswork because for all we know, the post-credits scene of that movie could somehow run into a grieving Iron Man, Cap and co.
Avengers 4 would then start with her just snapping everyone back to life, swinging by Titan to give Thanos a right telling-off, and then the rest of the movie will just be the Avengers chilling out with their new world-saving BFF.
At this point, anything is technically possible.
Captain Marvel will arrive in cinemas on March 8, 2019 in the UK and the US, with Avengers 4 set for release in UK cinemas on April 26, 2019 and US cinemas on May 3, 2019.
