Oh mamma mia, mamma mia. The first screenings for Bohemian Rhapsody have allowed lucky fans a glimpse of Rami Malek’s long-awaited and much-hyped portrayal of Freddie Mercury.
Bohemian Rhapsody has swung back and forth in the court of public opinion, everything from possible Oscar nods to “heterosexual-washing” got a mention in the lead up to the film’s release date.
Now, the results are in for the whole feature and Rami Malek (who made his name in Mr Robot) has been crowned for his convincing efforts.
He might look the part (he even donned fake teeth for the role) but it seems Malek has also clearly mastered the musicality and undeniable swagger of Freddie, especially during his rendition of the spine-tingling, historic Live Aid show.
The actor even had to audition for the original members of Queen before he was approved to take on Freddie’s killer personality.
Although Malek’s performance earned a glowing response, his imitation appeared to be one of the lone highlights of the film for some…
Comparisons were drawn with the other big cinema releases, including the critically acclaimed A Star Is Born, and there were those who felt Bohemian Rhapsody was under pressure.
Bohemian Rhapsody will have to wait and see if it becomes a champion or bites the dust.
Bohemian Rhapsody is out on October 24 in the UK and November 2 in the US. Book tickets for selected locations here.
