Over the past year Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s relationship has been plastered across the headlines. The details of their life together were revealed when a British newspaper branded the Pirates of the Caribbean star a “wife-beater”, claims which he disputed. These comments followed the couple’s divorce, which occurred May 23, 2016. Before the libel and lawsuits, Depp and Heard first met on the set of The Rum Diary.

The 2011 film starred Depp as Paul Kemp, a journalist who took a job in Puerto Rico.

He starred alongside Heard, who played Chenault, a young woman engaged to another man.

The story was based on a Hunter S Thompson book of the same name.

Depp was particularly thrilled to be a part of the adaptation as Thompson was a close friend of his.

At the time, Heard was a prominent actress but had not yet had her big break.

Working with a Hollywood icon such as Depp was no doubt going to improve her career, but she did not expect to fall in love with him.

She discussed the movie with Vogue in an interview in 2011, shortly after the film’s release, where she briefly commented on Thompson.

The Texan star said: “I loved Hunter S Thompson for a long time. I’ve got a soft spot for true individuals.”

Heard went on: “You can say many things about him, but he was definitely an individual.”

When asked about working with Depp, she jokingly said: “Working with Johnny was torture.”

She went on to add: “It was better than I ever imagined, which is really saying something.”

By the end of the following year, the pair were dating exclusively and had become public with their relationship.

Just two years later, Heard was spotted out and about wearing an enormous diamond ring on her engagement finger.

In 2014 Depp confirmed the engagement with The Daily Mail when he discussed wedding planning and pointed out a ring on his own finger.

He commented: “It’s probably a dead giveaway, isn’t it? Not very subtle.”

After being together for three years, the couple married in 2015.

According to People Magazine, Depp and Heard had a small, private ceremony in Los Angeles.

Just a year later they filed for divorce on May 23, 2016, prompting Heard to allege that Depp had “physically abused her” during the relationship.

Lately, Heard has been working hard on her upcoming film, Aquaman 2, which she stars in as Mera alongside Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa.

Aquaman is available on NOW.

The Pirates of the Caribbean series is available on Disney Plus.
