Spoiler alert! Thanos completed his mission at the end of Avengers: Infinity War by collecting all six Infinity Stones and using them to erase half of all life in the universe.
Couldn’t get more scary than that, right?
Not so, according to Infinity War and Avengers 4 co-writer Christopher Markus, who has revealed that the Infinity Gauntlet could be used to rewrite reality again and again and again.
“[The Infinity Stones have] been misused by people who didn’t understand their true power,” he said in an interview in Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War – The Art of the Movie (via ComicBook.com). “And now that the real master of them, Thanos, has shown up, we can see what they actually do.
“The problem is, as you can imagine, as you gain control over these things, your story just goes haywire because why are there any stakes for the man who can control time, space, reality, your mind, your soul and power? He can reset as many times as it’ll take.”
When the first Snap left the Infinity Gauntlet a smoking mess, we hoped that might mean that a second use of all the stones could be out of the question. Not so, apparently.
Fortunately, Markus does offer a suggestion as to how to end Thanos’ mastery of the Stones.
“So you have to build in a lot of bumps in the road or maybe keep one stone away from him for long enough in order for the thing to have any dramatic structure at all.”
‘Avengers: Piggy in the Middle’, anyone?
Avengers 4 will be released in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019.
