The first trailer for Disney's live-action Aladdin is here – but there's no sign of Will Smith

We may well have used up one of our three wishes, as the first official trailer for Disney’s live-action Aladdin is finally here – just days after Will Smith asked us to “choose wisely”.

Yes, our first-look at Guy Ritchie’s update on the animated classic has arrived, complete with sweeping visuals of Agrabah, a glimpse of Iago and, of course, our new hero in action.

(That’s Aladdin, not Genie, by the way.)

As well as teasing a darker spin on the magical tale, Aladdin‘s first trailer ends with Mena Massoud’s Aladdin reaching for the fabled lamp, but sadly, there’s no Genie to be seen just yet.

Don’t worry too much, mind – Will Smith is just as excited to share his portrayal of Genie as the rest of us, with the actor telling fans he can’t wait to be “BLUE!” earlier this week.

The colour of Will’s Genie might be one of only a few similarities to Robin Williams’ beloved version of the character, as Disney executive Cathleen Taff recently hinted.

“To state the obvious, no-one could replicate the iconic performance of Robin Williams,” she said back in April, before going on to describe Will’s performance as having “attitude”.

“[It’s] a little Fresh Prince, a little Hitch and a whole lot of attitude,” she promised. We’ve never had a friend like it.

Aladdin is set for release on May 24, 2019.
