Styling celebrities is about more than making them look good during award shows and red carpet events. Stylist Micaela Erlanger — who has dressed actresses like Lupita Nyong’o and Meryl Streep — told Vogue, “In general, our job is to be able to interpret any vision and be able to execute that. You have to be adaptable.” Elizabeth Saltzman, who has dressed the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, told the magazine, “A positive attitude and organization are key.” Saltzman advised aspiring stylists to “Return every email. And always treat everyone equally.”
That last piece of advice is important because aspiring celebrity stylists might one day find themselves with a specific type of young client who has a sophisticated taste in clothing — the celebrity kid. Some of those kids like Suri Cruise, for example, have moms who do more than act. Katie Holmes once owned the fashion line Holmes & Yang with Jeanne Yang. Even if they don’t pursue a career in the spotlight like their famous parents, children of celebrities still sometimes go to events like movie premieres. Or, maybe they just want to stand out at their birthday parties or on the first day of school. No matter the reason, we decided to uncover which celebrity kids actually have stylists.
Manuel Mendez dresses the Carter kids
It’s not surprising that Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy Carter has a personal stylist. We also aren’t shocked that Manuel Mendez was a part of the “Irreplaceable” singer’s entourage long before he started dressing her eldest daughter. Mendez was first a fashion assistant on Beyoncé’s I Am tour and stayed on her team to eventually become her personal assistant. “Years later, when Blue arrived to this world, I wanted to make sure to take care of both; Therefore I took the initiative of starting to buy her baby clothes like if she was my niece,” Mendez told BeLatina. He said the transition to becoming Blue’s stylist was natural. “Now Beyoncé has two other babies [Rumi and Sir] and I’m evenly excited to help her curate their wardrobe.”
Mendez shares posts detailing his outfit choices for Blue on Instagram, like when he dressed her in Chloé (presumably for a dance class) or a little black dress for a New Year’s Eve party. He even shared a message for the nine-year-old on her birthday. “On this special day, I wish you all the very best, all the joy you can ever have and may you be blessed abundantly today, tomorrow and the days to come!” it read, in part. Mendez also styles Blue’s siblings Rumi and Sir. A video that Mendez posted to Instagram of Sir dancing with Beyoncé in an Armani suit while filming Black Is King got media attention because it’s delightful.
North West had a stylist so she always matched her mom
The Kardashians have to look good on and off camera, so, of course, some of their kids have stylists. Now-exes Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have some pretty fashionable tots, which is understandable, considering they have a dad with a fashion line. Their first-born daughter North West had a stylist when she was just 16 months old to be sure she matched with Kardashian, Daily Mail reported. “The tailor, who is also paid to act as North’s stylist, works with Kanye and Kim’s styling team to create the toddler’s looks,” a source said, adding that some of the baby’s looks were commissioned and others were custom. “Her wardrobe is planned well in advance with regular meetings to discuss looks for the family’s public appearances, and North has versions to match a lot of what Kim wears, from dresses to handbags and shoes.”
We can’t confirm the name of her stylist as of 2021, but as she’s grown up, North has developed her own love for fashion, as E! reported. She styles her friends in designer duds for her mom to post on Instagram. North made her runway debut at the L.O.L. Surprise fashion show in 2018 (via Harper’s Bazaar). We also love the lace dress and leather jacket she wore to see The Lion King in 2016.
The Princess and Princes of Cambridge have to follow many fashion rules
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, And Prince Luis aren’t “celebrity” kids in the traditional sense. But they were born into royalty, so when they’re not wearing their school uniforms there are some strict fashion rules that their nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo (via Marie Claire) must follow whilst dressing them or assisting Kate in doing so. The children are also taught some of these rules in etiquette training, etiquette expert Myka Meier told People.
Boys are to wear shorts in public because there was a time when wearing pants indicated one was “middle class” Good Housekeeping reported. “The usual custom is that a boy graduates to trousers around eight years old,” another expert, William Hanson told Harper’s Bazaar. Charlotte has a lot of dresses in her future. “If you look at photos of young royal girls – from Princess Anne to Charlotte, you will notice that they tend to wear smocked dresses as little girls when they are in public with their parents,” Royal Musings blog founder Marlene Koenig told Harper’s Bazaar. Good Housekeeping reported that siblings often match while in public and that black is worn sparingly in the daytime, as it’s meant for mourning.
The Cambridges have worn clothing by designers like Rachel Riley, Elfie London, Marie Chantal, and Pepa & Company, Country & Town House reported.
