Eamonn Holmes has turned to a mystical stick to help him overcome his backache and get him walking again.

The telly favourite has been tortured with chronic pain for months – but now has help from “tree spirits”.

Former This Morning star Eamonn, 62, explained: “This year, walking is going to feature heavily in my plans.

“I damaged my sciatic nerve and getting about has been a real chore.

“Thankfully, the signs of recovery are there, but I’ve got to keep that right leg moving.

“Step forward Mr David Roberts from Pembrokeshire, who’s in the business of making staffs and walking sticks.

“Not just any old stick – this is a hazel branch decorated with vines from the forest.

“It’s a tribute to the tree spirits, the most powerful and wise of all spirits.

“David tells me hunters from ancient times would knock on trees before they entered the woods, to awaken the sleeping spirit for protection – and that’s where you get the sayings ‘knock on wood’ and ‘touch wood’.

“Well, touch wood this gets me out and about more, and that leg of mine gets stronger and better.”

Eamonn has been getting rave reviews with his return to breakfast TV with GB News.

But he said that getting back on his feet is crucial to get rid of his back pain hell once and for all.

He added: “So the thing is, I had two prolapsed discs in the base of my back and huge agony.

“And I had a month to five weeks of acute pain – chronic pain – and eventually I got an epidural and I had to take five steroid injections and the pain went.

“Phase two was that the discs had impinged on the sciatic nerve, the sciatic nerve in the right leg died.

“My foot, if we were in a car, it could accelerate but it couldn’t get back up to get the brake. So I can go down but I can’t come up, that’s dangerous.”
