Jay and The Americans singer Jay Black dies after health ‘complications’

American singer Jay Black has sadly passed away at the age of 82.

Jay was the lead singer of rock group Jay and the Americans. The band was mainly active during the 1960s and enjoyed a very successful musical career.

On Saturday, Jay's family announced that the singer died from complications due to pneumonia.

A Facebook post written by the band online read: "Today, we mourn the passing of David Blatt a/k/a Jay Black and we acknowledge the great successes we had with him both as a partner and as a lead singer.

"We shared both wonderful and very contentious times, and much like an ex-wife, we are so proud of the beautiful children we created."

The group concluded by referencing his nickname and saying: "We'll always remember The Voice."

Jay and the Americans were famously known for opening for The Beatles during their first US performance in Washington DC back in 1964.

However years later, Jay, who was born David Blatt decided to embark on solo career.

During the later part of his career, he became well known for touring in his hometown of New York State and Florida, singing, mainly solo, and preceding his singing with a stand-up comedy routine.

Talking to magazine publication Rolling Stone, his family previously said: "New and old fans continued to marvel at the strength and range of Black's voice through his last concert in 2017.

"He had a special bond with his fans… He thought of them as family, knew many of their names, and would dedicate songs to them from the stage and meet with them after the show."

The singer lived an active lifestyle up until his heart-breaking death.

He performed his last concert in 2017.

Jay is survived by his four children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Since the news of his passing, fans have flooded to Twitter to share their condolences to the star and his family.

One fan tweeted: "Music I grew up with. RIP Jay Black."

Another wrote: "RIP one of the great, high-pitch vocal leads of the 60s- Jay Black of Jay & The Americans."

Meanwhile another heartbroken fan wrote: "What a magnificent voice! RIP Jay Black."
