Peter Kay in triumphant stage return with weight loss jokes – and garlic bread

Peter Kay was last on tour 12 years ago – but it was clear his fans had been eagerly awaiting his return from the moment he stepped on stage at Manchester's AO Arena on Friday (December 2).

With the crowd chanting the comedian's name, the 49-year-old couldn't hide his emotions and he was left so touched he let out a few tears.

"Lovely Manchester, you made me cry," he said (via Manchester Evening News ), as he tried to get to grips with his emotions.

But as soon as he wiped away the tears, Peter made sure the rest of the night was about making his fans laugh – and he did just that.

There was something for everyone – fans of old knowing the in-jokes and famous gags from years past, while fans who had never seen him live enjoyed musings on modern life.

Peter showed fans what they'd been missing, and the big stage return clearly meant a lot to him.

He explained how he'd worked in the same arena as a steward back in 1995, telling the audience about his job interview.

"I'm so f***ing grateful, I was a steward and now I'm up here," he said, looking at the 15,000-strong crowd hooked on his every word.

Peter touched upon the famous faces he's met during his career, getting hilariously close to the knuckle with some of them.

And don't worry – garlic bread gets a good old mention too.

Peter even gave a nod to his recently slimmed-down look in his slick black suit, joking: "See how much weight Peter Kay has lost."

As the show came to a close, Peter got to live out his rock'n'roll dreams in a way only he could.

And he was joined by an all-star cameo that was met with amazement by the audience – but with 109 shows to go, it would be a disservice to spoil that now.

Spoiling the show was something Peter himself was concerned with too as he asked fans not to video anything.

He told the audience: "Let's just live in the moment, and not spoil it for other people."
