Sinead O'Connor has converted to Islam and been given a new name

Irish singer Sinead O’Connor has revealed that she’s converted to Islam and has changed her name.

The ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ star explained that her decision was the “natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey”, adding her new name was Shuhada’.

“This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim,” the star wrote on Twitter. “This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey.

“All scripture study leads to Islam. Which makes all other scriptures redundant. I will be given (another) new name. It will be Shuhada’.”

She later tweeted: “Thank you so much to all my Muslim brothers and sisters who have been so kind as to welcome me to Ummah today on this page. You can’t begin to imagine how much your tenderness means to me.”

She also posted a video singing the adhan, or Islamic call to prayer, and featured in a video saying the Islamic declaration of faith.

The star’s name has now been legally changed to Magda Davitt.

Davitt has been outspoken about religion throughout her career, particularly the Catholic Church, famously ripping up a photo of the Pope during an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

She was also ordained by a breakaway church, but the Catholic Church did not recognise the ceremony as it does not allow women to become priests.
