Bill Bailey downplays chances of winning Strictly Come Dancing: ‘Very difficult to tell!’

Strictly: Bill Bailey says it’s ‘hard to tell’ who will win series

Bill, 55, has been partnered with Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse, 30, to take part in this year’s season of the BBC dance show. With the trained dancer currently the reigning champion, it seems she could secure a second win with the comedian after stealing the viewers and judges’ hearts. However, the musician doesn’t seem to be holding out much hope of giving his partner her second consecutive victory.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine about who could win the programme: “It’s a tough one. It’s quite close to call.

“Everyone has their own style, everyone has their own skills but as you say, it’s very tough. The competition is very good.

“Everyone is putting out great dances every week so, at the moment, it’s hard to tell,” he said, before commending his fellow contestants.

“HRVY did a fantastic dance, a wonderful American Smooth. Maisie’s [Smith] got some brilliant talent, she’s a fantastic dancer.

“Ranvir [Singh] has great elegance and style and Jamie [Laing] is a real powerhouse, he has lots of energy. It’s very difficult to tell. Everyone has got something to bring to each performance.”

The only person Bill didn’t mention was himself, suggesting he sees one of his co-stars as the potential champion of the season.

According to the latest odds from Coral bookmakers, it seems the comedian is on course to lift the Glitterball Trophy.

At 11/10, Bill and Oti are leading the charge for victory, with their closest competitor being chart-topper HRVY, 21, and Janette Manrara, 37.

The latter couple, who are the only pairing to have got a perfect score this season, are at 7/4 to become champions.

Close on their heels is Good Morning Britain presenter Ranvir, 43, and her professional partner Giovanni Pernice, 30, at 5/1.

Coral spokesperson John Hill said: “This is the closest finish we have ever had to a series of Strictly as you can make a strong case for the majority of the contestants going into the semi-final.

“Bill Bailey is the marginal favourite but things could all change this weekend,” he continued before explaining who might be the contestant to knock the comedian off the top spot.

”Ranvir Singh may be the one to keep an eye on as her odds have shortened with every week of the series as she has improved throughout.”

“It should be a great finale to the show,” Hill explained, with the conclusion of the series airing next weekend.

However, before then, each of the remaining five couples must showcase two routines in the semi-final on Saturday night.

This week, Bill and his professional dancing partner are rehearsing to perform a Tango to Enter Sandman by Metallica.

For the second option, the musician will be taking on a Charleston to the track (Won’t You Come Home) Bill Bailey by Ottilie Patterson with Chris Barber.

Speaking about his success on the show, Bill has said: “We all need a bit of escapism, sparkle, sequins and ballroom.

“I’ve been performing comedy for nearly 30 years, so I’m used to putting on a show, but no one’s more surprised than me about all this.

“I’m still slightly stunned and dazed by it all,” the stage performer told, explaining he has ever only tried to “do his best”.

Oti’s also added she has learnt a lot from her contestant about dance, stating she knows how to “evolve” his ideas.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
