EastEnders director reportedly sacked after working despite positive Covid test

An EastEnders director has lost his job after continuing to go to work despite having tested positive for Covid-19.

oe Nugent reportedly had coronavirus symptoms during the weekend of October 17 and 18 and decided to take a test, but failed to tell his colleagues.

While waiting for the results, Nugent reportedly went to work at the BBC’s Elstree set in Borehamwood, Herts, last Monday and Tuesday.

It was only late on Tuesday, when his positive result was confirmed, that he told bosses about his condition.

According to The Sun, members of the EastEnders cast were "apoplectic" and threatened mutiny.

It's also been reported one cast member has also tested positive for the virus.

A show official wrote to staff saying: "You will all have heard we had an active Covid case on site.

"This should serve as a reminder that keeping ourselves and our colleagues safe is an ongoing situation and a shared responsibility."

Chiefs confirmed two positive cases of coronavirus on set, Nugent and an unnamed cast member.

Nugent, who had worked on the show for up to ten years, has now been told never to return to Albert Square but it is not known if he faces a police probe.

An EastEnders source told The Sun: "The director has let everyone down. The show has worked so hard to get EastEnders back on TV, and he could have undone all that work.

"Senior actors were livid and felt let down. There was talk of a mutiny. He was given the boot, partly to assuage cast members."

Following Nugent’s shock actions, BBC executives ordered the set to be deep-cleaned and fully sanitised.

EastEnders bosses confirmed filming will continue but there will be “schedule changes”.

"EastEnders adheres to government guidelines and enforces strict social distancing measures at all times," a spokesperson told Daily Star Online.

"We have rigorous protocols in place to manage Covid-19 as the safety of all those involved in the production is paramount."

Staff have been tested regularly since filming resumed on June 29.

Eastenders airs on Mondays at 8.05pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7.35pm and Fridays at 8.30pm on BBC One.
