Gemma Atkinson says she’s 1st Strictly Come Dancing star to gain weight on show

Gemma Atkinson has claimed that she is the first Strictly Come Dancing contestant to gain weight while starring on the show.

The former Hollyoaks and Emmerdale actress appeared on the show in 2017 when she was partnered with professional dancer Aljaz Skorjanec.

Aljaz and Gemma made the final – but lost out to Scot, Joe McFadden.

Contestants usually get excited for being on the show as they often look noticeably leaner afterwards due to the immense amount of training.

The 35-year-old is known for being a gym fanatic but when it came to being on the programme, Gemma said it was a different story.

She told the Daily Record: "I think I’m the only contestant who gained weight during Strictly and I always say that openly because the training is hard, it’s intense, but because I train differently anyway, my body kind of went backwards a bit and the main reason was because I let my diet slip massively on Strictly.

"We trained above a sweet shop, so I had a Toblerone nearly every day, fast food, anything that was just quick and easy really."

Gemma revealed: "I think I put on about six or seven pounds by the end of it."

The stunning actress has spoken about her body confidence and self-confidence on multiple occasions and can often be found uplifting her fans.

She once revealed on her Instagram that her nickname in school was "thunder thighs" which cruel bullies taunted her with.

Due to lockdown and old episodes of the soaps being aired Gemma then became target to nasty online trolls who called her "fat".

Gemma, who also played Carly Hope in Emmerdale until 2017, said: "A guy DM’d (direct messaged) me, and he said, 'I never realised at the time but you were fat in Hollyoaks, weren’t you?'.

"I went back to him and I said, 'Well, I was 15, so I was chubbier than what I am now, but please don’t let your daughter think that’s your idea of fat… she will have problems for the rest of her life if that’s the case'."

While the beauty can brush off remarks from trolls she's said she's worried her daughter Mia, one, might struggle one day.

Gemma shares Mia with boyfriend Gorka Marquez, 29, who she met on Strictly when he was partnered with Alexandra Burke.

"One of my biggest fears for Mia, in the environment we’re in now, with the Instagram and the filters and the quick fix, these jabs and pills, it terrifies me that she’ll say, 'Mum, I’ve read that if I do this injection it will make me thin'’"
