Vera season 11 is airing on ITV and the much-loved detective drama welcomed back DCI Vera Stanhope (played by Brenda Blethyn). Two feature-length episodes have aired so far, titled Witness and Recovery, and they saw the mac-wearing detective investigate complex murders. Fans are keen to find out when episode three will air and has all you need to know.

Is Vera coming back in 2021?

Vera season 11 made its debut on August 29 and the first episode saw the title character investigate the murder of a highly-regarded builder.

The second episode saw Vera delve deeper into the private life of an addiction support worker who was found dead.

Along the way she is assisted by DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty), DC Jacqueline Williams (Ibinabo Jack) and DC Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison) amongst others.

The latest series will be made up of six episodes, but fans will have to wait a while for the next outing.

The first two episodes went into production at the end of 2020, but the remaining four are still in the making.

With this in mind, the series will not be returning until 2022, so sadly there will be no more new episodes this year.

Work on the new series was due to begin in March 2020 but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Actress Blethyn said she had to spend 12 weeks away from her husband, who was in London, due to the restrictions.

She had been in Ramsgate collecting things to take to Newcastle for filming and was unable to go back to London.

The star said the pandemic made it more difficult to film, saying it “lengthened the filming time of each episode by about a week”.

The restrictions also impacted the practicalities of being able to film in the studio and on location.

For example, only a limited number of people were allowed in the same room at any one time.

Blethyn said: “We needed to be two metres apart. So a green screen would be put to use.

“Which means that when Vera is interrogating a suspect, the suspect isn’t actually there! I just had to make you believe that they were.”

By the time filming began in the autumn of 2020, production would have usually been finished by then.

Executive producer Phil Hunter said he did not want to compromise the quality of the episodes by rushing into filming.

He said: “First and foremost it was about making sure everyone’s well-being and safety was protected.

“But also, really importantly, that the show could come back and be shot in a meaningful way that has merit and it looks as good as any episode of Vera shot during normal times.”

Still, this has not stopped fans from expressing their disappointment over the delay.

ITV scheduler John Williams provided some insight into the popularity of the first two episodes on Twitter.

He said: “Close to 7m watched last weeks episode of #Vera with @BrendaBlethyn & @kennydoughty.

“Catch both new episodes now on @itvhub & #Vera will be back in 2022 on @ITV.” [Sic]

One fan tweeted: “Hope this also means an extended Vera on 2022 with season 12 following on from the other 4 episodes of season 11.”

In the meantime, fans can follow the social media accounts for the series and can rewatch previous episodes on the ITV Hub.

An official release date for the remaining four episodes is yet to be announced.

Vera will return to ITV in 2022.
