Strictly Come Dancing star John Whaite has revealed Steph McGovern sent him a “beautiful” and “meaningful” text message when she found out he had signed up to the BBC show.

John, who explained the pair have become close friends since he joined her on her Channel 4 daytime show Steph’s Packed Lunch, said he was so taken aback by the message that it reduced him to tears.

The 32-year-old Bake Off star explained: “When Steph McGovern found out she texted me saying, ‘I know your news!’ but I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone at this point so I just said, ‘Don’t know what you’re talking about mate.’”

John added: “Then, before I was about to go on BBC Radio Two with Matt Lucas [for the announcement], Steph texted me the most beautiful text.”

Opening up about the lovely things Steph said to him, John revealed: “She just said, ‘be your fabulous, funny, gorgeous, clever self.’”

He continued: “Steph’s not lovey dovey like that, she doesn’t like hugs and stuff, she’s very, very down to earth, so for her to say that kind of thing was very meaningful. It actually made me cry.”

And Steph isn’t the only member of the extended Steph’s Packed Lunch gang who has been supporting John behind-the-scenes.

He said: "Gemma Atkinson, who I work with on Steph’s Packed Lunch, has said Strictly is the most insane thing you’ll ever do, but the most wonderful, so she said to enjoy it.

“She also said that, believe it or not, you put weight on because you’re eating whatever you want and you have a drink on a Saturday night after you’ve finished. She said she put a few kilos on, so I’ll have to watch what I eat.”

However, not everyone on the show knew that John would be taking part this year – as one half of the competition’s first all-male partnership.

In fact, the baker admitted that he struggled to hide the news from show regular, Strictly star and brand new judge Anton Du Beke.

John explained: “Anton hasn’t given me a single tip because he didn’t know.”

“I was dying to tell him I was on the show because I knew last time I saw him on Steph’s Packed Lunch, I knew I was going to be the first all-male partnership, but I thought if I tell him it’ll break that boundary," he continued.

“I don’t want him to give me any advice, I just want to crack on with it and get through if I’m good and go home if I’m not.”
