Kay Burley: Phillip Schofield makes a joke about the presenter
Sky News has announced Kay Burley will not present her weekday morning show for the next six months after she broke coronavirus restrictions last weekend. She and a small number of Sky News staff attended a social event in London to celebrate her 60th birthday and did not follow government rules. As a result of an internal review, she has agreed to a longer period of absence while political editor Beth Rigby and correspondent Inzamam Rashid have agreed to be off air for three months.
Sky News said, “everyone is expected to comply with the rules and the company takes breaches like this very seriously”.
Kay also posted a comment on her Twitter account to explain the decision in more detail.
She captioned the pre-written comment with: “Hello everyone, News about me. Thanks for all your kind wishes.”
The official comment itself read: “I have today agreed with Sky News to step back from my broadcasting role for a period of reflection.

“It’s clear to me that we are all in the fight against cover 19 and that we all have a day to stick firmly by the rules.
“It doesn’t matter that I thought I was cover-compliant on a recent social event. The fact is I was wrong, I made a big mistake, and I am sorry.
“Some dear friends and colleagues – some of the most talented and committed professional in our business – have been pulled into this episode and I regret this enormously.
“I was one of the founding presenters on Sky News. No one is prouder of our channel’s reputation, the professionals on our team, and the impact we make.
“I very much look forward to being able to continue my 32 year career with Sky when I return,” it concluded.
The statement left many divided with some thinking Sky News should’ve taken more drastic action, while others offering their support to Kay.
One said: “Surely you have to resign. Staggering hypocrisy if you don’t, considering that’s your MO asking people if they are going to resign for breaking rules.”
“There is a photo of you clearly hugging @BethRigby how is that Covid compliant ??!!” A Twitter user fumed.
Meanwhile, an alternative comment read: “She’s sorry because she got caught. How can someone who’s nose in the news 24/7 not understand the rules. You’re finished.”

Kay Burley taken off air for six months confirms Sky News
“Take care Kay, don’t let the begrudgers bring you down. You made a mistake, you owned it , end of. Hope you have a very Happy Christmas and that 2021 will be a brighter year for all,” someone else wrote.
Another chimed: “Very professional regardless of the situation. All the best Kay and hopefully see you back soon.”
“Thank you for your honesty and having the integrity to admit your mistake and take responsibility for it. You’ll be back,” one wrote online.
Kay’s flouting of rules broke over the weekend and the broadcaster commented and apologised.
She told her Twitter followers she had made an “error of judgement” after she “inadvertently broke the rules” by popping into another restaurant to use the toilet on her way home.
But it was widely reported that the broadcaster had, in fact, had returned home with four other members of the group she was socialising with – who were not in her support bubble or household.
Beth and Inzamam are yet to make a statement.
