What If is releasing later this summer on Disney Plus and will be the first anthology series for the Marvel franchise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, has been running for over 10 years and this new show will take it in a wildly new direction. Express.co.uk has all the information on the latest Marvel chapter.
What is the release date of What If…?
What If represents the first big change in the MCU since it originally premiered in 2008 with Iron Man.
With Black Widow releasing in cinemas this week, it marks the 24th film in the franchise, rivalling James Bond as the biggest franchise in terms of instalments – Bond as 26 films.
This also doesn’t include the other Marvel shows that have released this year or the previous shows they released with Netflix, including Daredevil.
What If will release on August 11 and will air weekly on Disney Plus.
There is due to be 10 episodes of the show, each showcasing a different what-if scenario from the franchise.
Who is in the cast of What If…?
The show will bring back many of the cast members that have played the same characters in live-action films and TV shows.
However, the show will also be using new voice actors for the stars that have left the series.
Jeffrey Wright will be leading the series as The Watcher, an omnipotent being that oversees the various different universes of the MCU.
The returning actors include Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
The late Chadwick Boseman also voices T’Challa for the show, recording his lines before his untimely passing.
Is there a trailer for What If…?
Yes, Marvel released the first full trailer for the series this week, giving fans an insight on what to expect from the show.
The trailer shows various characters from the upcoming series, all characters fans have met before, however, they are in wildly different looks.
Fans have rushed to the comments on the trailer which was posted to YouTube, with many of them sharing their excitement for the upcoming show.
One fan said: “R.I.P Chadwick Boseman, glad he was still able to give us this before he passed. WAKANDA FOREVER!”
Another fan added: “This is literally like one big giant fan fiction, and I’m all for it.”
What is the plot of What If…?
What If will be exploring pivotal moments from the MCU and turning them on their head, giving fans a glimpse at various potential timelines.
The show will be animated and showcase different versions of the Marvel characters fans have come to know and love.
Essentially, Marvel is venturing further into the concept of the multiverse, which is being introduced to fans right now in the Loki TV show.
The first hint at the multiverse came in Spiderman: Far From Home, when Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal) claimed to be from another version of the Earth.
This is all building towards Doctor Strange And The Multiverse of Madness, which will see Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) battle monsters from alternative universes.
What If is also preparing fans for Spiderman: No Way Home, which is set for release later this year – December 17, 2021.
The plot is being kept under wraps, however, it will include Doctor Strange, alongside J Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons), Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), and Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx).
Fans might recall Octavius and Dillon being villains from the films Spiderman 2 and Amazing Spiderman 2, both being separate franchises.
This has led fans to speculate that the film will bridge the gap between the three different Spiderman franchises, creating a live-action Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse.
While nothing has been confirmed by Sony or Marvel, there are heavy rumours that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire will both be reprising their roles as their respective Spidermen.
What If…? will be available to watch exclusively on Disney Plus from August 11
