“Orange Is the New Black” star Samira Wiley was forced to come out as gay after a fellow cast member publicly shared the news.
The actress was left in tears when a promotional interview during season one of the hit Netflix series turned personal.
“I wasn’t out at all,” Wiley said during an interview with the Nancy podcast with Kathy Tu and Tobin Low. “Someone from my cast actually, doing an interview they were talking about out gay actors in the cast… and they mentioned my name and I saw it in print, and I cried. I cried a lot.”
Samira did not identify the castmate who shared the information, but admits it forced her to come out before she could decide how she wanted to announce the news.
“I tried to get it taken down…,” she continued. “That’s something somebody took from me. Everyone’s journey is their own. You should be able to come out on your own terms.”
Wiley has since exited the show and recently won an Emmy award for her role on “The Handmaid’s Tale“.
