Hollyoaks has confirmed the existence of the coronavirus pandemic — and the lockdown period — within the soap’s fictional universe.
In tonight’s episode (September 9), the timeline returned to the present day — after a series of predominantly flashback episodes.
During one particular scene, John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) met boyfriend PC George Kiss (Callum Kerr), and they discussed things that they could do together as a couple.
The pair’s conversation confirmed the existence of coronavirus within the soap’s fictional universe, as John Paul had been spending lockdown teaching online, while George — being a police officer — was working on the frontline.
The Channel 4 soap was forced to shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic, and as a result episodes have been rationed out, with only two outings airing a week in an effort to keep it on our screens.
In the meantime, the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday slots on E4 were occupied with older episodes in a new series which revisits the best of Chester’s best.
We saw iconic instalments such as Mercedes’ wedding to Doctor Browning, Lindsey and Silas’ face-off, Sinead, Sienna and Diane taking down rapist Laurie Shelby, Cleo’s exit in the fab three-hander from last year — as well an entire weeks devoted to icons Clare Devine and Brendan Brady.
