The new series of Strictly Come Dancing 2021 is well underway, and this weekend the remaining 13 celebrities will take to the dancefloor in a bid to impress the judges. Last Sunday, former Coronation Street actress Katie McGlynn was eliminated from the competition. The week before Nina Wadia was sent home by the judges after landing in the bottom two. The contestants have been thrown out of their comfort zones as they learn a new routine each week, and in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, GMB’s Richard Arnold said he spoke with judge Anton du Beke about the challenges each celebrity is facing.

Anton is no stranger to the pressures of taking part in the dance competition.

However, this year, he has taken a seat on the judging panel joining Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse.

Richard, who took part in Strictly in 2012, explained the whole experience for him was “quite overwhelming”.

“I was speaking to Anton du Beke last week and he said, ‘You know what people don’t understand with Strictly it’s not just nerves, it is abject fear’.”

He continued: “You know it’s even a struggle to put one foot in front of each other.

“It is quite overwhelming. The professional dancers don’t just teach you the dance.

“They teach you how to weather being in that extraordinary bubble.

“It is so nerve-wracking. It was not a natural home for me,” the entertainment presenter added.

Richard also hit out at the judges’ scoring as he admitted he was “furious” they scored McFly star Tom Fletcher so low during the first live show.

The celebrities received mixed reviews from the judging panel, although, the audience booed when Craig gave Tom and Amy Dowden a score of four.

Motsi gave the duo a seven, while both Shirley and new judge Anton scored them a five.

Despite Amy and Tom being pleased with the overall score, Richard thought the pair were scored unfairly.

“I was furious that his score seemed to be quite low for the Cha Cha,” the presenter explained.

“He is so light on his feet. I think he is going to be one to watch.”

Following Tom’s first live show, he and Amy were forced to self-isolate after contracting coronavirus.

However, the dynamic duo were back on Saturday and despite having a week off of training, they seemed to impress the judging panel.

Last weekend, the celebrities took to the dancefloor for Movie Week.

When it came to the results, viewers were left in shock when presenter Judi Love and dance partner Graziano Di Prima found themselves in the bottom two.

For the second week in a row, actress Katie and Gorka Márquez joined them to face a potential elimination.

After both couples had performed, the judges decided to save Judi and Graziano.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.
