The cast of The Haunting of Hill House have revealed that there are a few sneaky Easter eggs in the season finale that hint at the show returning.
The Netflix horror series is based on the classic horror novel from Shirley Jackson, so that would make it seem as if the series would be self-contained. Not so, according to cast member Oliver Jackson-Cohen.
“There’s a couple of Easter eggs at the end that allow it to [continue for a second season],” he said. “But they’re very, very slight, they’re not so obvious. Again it’s [writer] Mike [Flanagan] being a genius. There’s something in the background somewhere.
“It probably feels like it closed a book but if you look closer it’s very much not closed.”
Laughing, he added: “Thing is, they can do whatever they want. Basically, we don’t get a choice.”
Digital Spy also spoke exclusively to Michiel Huisman about Oliver’s comments, and he revealed: “I think I know what is referred to… That’s part of what happens in the finale of this season.
“It’s also part of what explains a little bit of what has been happening to everyone that lived in that house for all those years. It sort of explains the power of the house.”
Huisman acknowledged that, thus far, he has “no idea” what a second season would entail, but said it “could have to do with those Easter eggs”, though he stressed that “it could also be something totally different”.
“I’m up for anything,” he told us.
On top of the Easter eggs pointing to a second season, showrunner Mike Flanagan and his team also included references to E.T. and Doctor Who in the series.
The Haunting of Hill House is available now exclusively on Netflix.
