The Last Kingdom: Netflix tease fourth season of show
The Last Kingdom is on Netflix now and fans were excited for the fourth season to arrive in the spring of 2020. Towards the end of the season, Haesten (played by Jeppe Beck Laursen) found himself caught up in the Winchester siege. He ended up helping Eadith (Stefanie Martini) stay safe, and he even let her go free, and fans are wondering what his motives were.
Why did Heasten let Eadith go free?
One of the favourite antagonists in The Last Kingdom is the Danish warrior Haesten, who is known for fulfilling his own self-indulgence.
His character is always looking for a way to gain something from any situation, and although he does not usually initiate battles, he is prepared to take part in them if he will benefit.
Season four saw Haesten go head to head with protagonist Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) in what has been described as a James Bond moment.
Haesten and his men had captured Uhtred and his friends and had tied them upside down from a tree. Luckily for Uhtred, Eadith rescued him and his friends while Haesten was out of the way.
Fans noticed Haesten’s reputation as a fierce warrior was starting to slip, as he had failed to detain Uhtred.

He has also expressed an interest in hanging up his sword and withdrawing from future battles, wanting to settle down with some land and a new woman.
This left viewers feeling surprised, especially when he started to show some empathy towards Eadith during the Winchester siege.
In his own way, he attempted to keep her out of harm’s way, although it backfired when Eadith presumed Haesten was planning to have his way with her.
During the siege, Haesten and Eadith were seen running through the crowds, attempting to escape the battle. Haesten tried to grab Eadith so they could run together, but she managed to shake herself free and went off in another direction.
Fans have taken to Reddit to ask why Haesten did not kill or assault Eadith when he had the chance, as this would have usually been in his nature.
Knotjust said: “It seems weirdly out of character for him. He tried to rape Skade [Thea Sofie Loch Naess] in the previous season but didn’t because of her threats of curse.
“But I find it REALLY hard to believe that he wouldn’t force himself on Eadith considering her beauty and lack of power. Is this addressed at all in the books?
“Also on that note, it seems like none of the female characters were taken advantage of while Winchester was under siege… which is odd considering it’s overrun with Danes.”
The series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, and it seems Eadith and Haesten’s run-in with each other was entirely made up for the show.
Fans have pointed out how the pair do not even meet in the books, and they said their characters in the source material are very different.

Cheapcakeripper said: “They seemed to imply that Haesten was tired of his old ways except for spying.
“As mad as it sounds he probably thought that this time he’d try different and be nice and that would allow him to have a shot at Stockholm syndrome he had already witnessed twice even though it’s still 300 years before Stockholm was founded.
“As for killing he must have assumed that with all the fighting she’s going to be dead either way, but of course she has been stomped by hundreds of men and survived just because she’s a future love interest.”
Some fans have suggested Haesten saw Eadith as a bargaining chip he could use to his advantage later down the line, which is why he wanted to keep her alive and on side.
Viewers believe Haesten will see his demise in the fifth season, as he is aware the game is already up, knowing Uhtred is still alive.
As far fetched as it may seem, there is always a chance Haesten will decide to team up with Uhtred if he realises it is his only option to stay alive.
Actor Laursen has not ruled out the possibility, and in a previous interview with Express.co.uk, he said it would be exciting to see Haesten join Team Uhtred.
Fans are excited to learn more about Eadith’s character, as she was one of the newcomers for season four. She was last seen with Uhtred’s friend Finan (Mark Rowley) after she managed to escape Winchester.
While there is still a chance Haesten could pursue Eadith in season five, fans are rooting for Eadith and Finan to form a romantic relationship.
