Season two of The OA has proved to be even more mind-bending than the first instalment. The OA season two picked up from the events of the shocking finale in which Prairie Johnson (played by Brit Marling) was rushed to hospital after being fatally wounded by a high school shooter. The new series of the Netflix show saw the action shifting between dimensions as Prairie found herself in the body of Nina Azarova, another version of herself in this new parallel world. However, Prairie refers to herself as OA which has led to some confusion among audiences.
What does OA stand for in the show The OA?

The OA stands for “the original angel”, which was revealed in season one, episode four called Away.
In Away, Prairie had a near-death experience (NDE) after she was accidentally killed by Hap (Jason Isaacs) when she tried to escape. Hap knocked her unconscious with a shovel before she could fall off the edge of a gaping chasm.
Prairie was sent back into a strange interstellar dimension where she met supernatural being Khatun (Hiam Abbass) again, who offered her the chance to be reunited with her dead father or return to the mortal world.
She chose the latter in a bid to save her friends from Hap’s clutches and never see her father again.

For making such a selfless choice, Khatun rewarded Prairie by giving her the ability to travel through dimensions. Prairie had to swallow a bird which Khatun gave her in order to harness these new powers.
Khatun informed Prairie she was the “original” and that along with her friends, they must prevent a great evil which was believed referred to Hap. She was then sent back to the world of living with her sight restored.
When Prairie came back to life, she revealed to her friends she was the Original Angel and they were also angels who could travel through worlds and do good.
Each of them then had NDEs in which they became angels after swallowing a living creature and learning one of the Five Moments needed to travel through dimensions.
When Prairie first returned home after escaping from Hap, she insisted she was now known as the OA.
WHO IS ELODIE IN THE OA SEASON 2?
However, her parents found it hard to come to terms with her new moniker and still referred to her as Prairie, the name they gave her after choosing to adopt her from a shady brothel run by her aunt.
Season two of The OA did not mention the angels and instead focused on Prairie as she battled to escape Hap’s clutches again in this new world.
She was also desperately hoping Homer (Emory Cohen) would finally remember their time in Hap’s basement before they had jumped though dimensions.
Perhaps the most interesting addition to The OA mythology was the introduction of a giant psychic octopus called Old Night (Eijiro Ozaki), who revealed himself to be Azrael or the angel of death.
When OA went to commune with Old Night at the nightclub Syzygy, the being confirmed he knew her true identity as the Original Angel.
THE OA SEASON 2 ENDING EXPLAINED
Old Night went on to reveal that in each world the OA had a brother who would protect her. There was a hint that private investigator Karim Washington (Kingsley Ben-Adir) could be her inter-dimensional sibling.
Season two seemed to throw up more questions than answers. We are still in the dark about the true purpose of the angels after it seemed that Hap may not be the evil force he was first thought to be.
Instead, it was revealed the OA, Homer and Hap were inexplicably linked through the different worlds and would continue to be together as they travelled through dimensions.
If The OA does get recommissioned for a third season, audiences could learn more about the mythology of the series.
