The homeless pet problem has reached epidemic levels as about 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year, the ASPCA reports. Of those animals, 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
The good news is these statistics are on the decline. Many dogs and cats are being adopted instead of shopped from a pet store or breeder. One initiative that helps match pets with their forever home is the partnership between adoption centers and media outlets. For instance, NBC Sports Group joined forces with North Shore Animal League America for an all-out fun, puppy experience.
This is why NBC wanted to feature pups
Although just about everyone loves a cute puppy, Lyndsay Signor, vice president, consumer engagement at NBC Sports Group told The Cheat Sheet, “The main purpose behind this partnership between NBC Sports and NSALA, is to reflect our joint dedication to bringing awareness to the plight of animal homelessness in America and the importance of pet adoption.”
Also, “North Shore Animal League America is the world’s largest no-kill, rescue and adoption organization and through our partnership, we are aiming to shine a light on the importance of animal rescue and adoption while creating excitement around Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway at 2 p.m. ET on NBC.”
But, NASCAR? Why?

NBC decided to seize on the moment when NASCAR season is heating up. Plus, “People love puppies and people love NASCAR, so it seemed like a different and fun way to bring ‘puppy power’ to a few of NBC Sports’ NASCAR weekends,” Signor said.
The team went all out and included a custom-built NASCAR Track model containing adoptable puppies posing as your favorite drivers (e.g. Paw-stin Dillion, Chase “Your Tail” Elliot, etc.). The effort is meant to drive awareness about the importance of rescue and adoption while finding all Pup Series animals a loving home. All the puppies participating are available for adoption.
Why doesn’t everyone adopt instead of shop?

Anthony Angioletti, director, offsite programs of North Shore Animal League America told The Cheat Sheet misconceptions still exist about adoption. Some misconceptions include that rescue organizations are:
- Shelters are sad and depressing places
- Some are dirty
- Rescues only have sick animals or animals with behavioral issues
“These above statements could not be farther from the truth. Anyone can find the perfect animal for their family at their local shelter,” Angioletti said. “Many shelters have vets and trainers on hand that will medical and behaviorally evaluate each animal. NSALA have adoption counseling that will work with the adopters to find the best animal to fit their lifestyle.”
NSALA has shelter partners all over the country. Potential adopters are urged to visit Animalleague.org to find an animal in their area. The NASCAR puppy party moves onto the Alabama 500 NASCAR Cup Series race. Held at the Talladega Superspeedway airing on October 14th at 2:00 pm ET on NBC.
