Sir Michael Gambon: Legendary actor dead aged 82

Jeremy Clarkson has paid tribute to Sir Michael Gambon, who died peacefully with his family by his side after suffering from pneumonia.

Taking to his Instagram page this afternoon, Jeremy, 63, shared a picture of Michael from one of his appearances on Top Gear.

In view of his 7.1 million followers, he wrote: “Wonderful man.”

On X, previously known as Twitter, The Grand Tour host also shared: “I’m so sad to hear that Michael Gambon has died.

“He was hugely amusing, and such a tremendous guest, we even named a corner after him.”

The presenter was referring to the time Michael drove a Suzuki Liana as part of the ‘reasonably priced car’ challenge on Top Gear and nearly flipped over at the last corner.

The late actor was best known for playing Professor Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight Harry Potter films.

Michael’s many other credits include his roles as French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV series Maigret and starring as Philip Marlow in Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective on the BBC.

He began his career as one of the original members of the Royal National Theatre in London and went on to star in multiple Shakespeare plays.

In 1998, the actor was knighted for services to the entertainment industry.

Following the news of his death, many other tributes have flooded in.

Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison wrote: “The funniest actor I’ve ever worked with.

“My lunch breaks on Dad’s Army were spent wanting to hear story after story from him. A phenomenal actor. RIP Sir Michael Gambon.”

The official page for Harry Potter shared: “We are incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Michael Gambon.

“He brought immeasurable joy to Harry Potter fans from all over the world with his humour, kindness and grace. We will forever hold his memory in our hearts.”

Jared Harris shared a video of the actor explaining why he didn’t like being interviewed on Top Gear, alongside the caption: “Hilarious! A brilliant actor. I saw him on stage several times, and he lives unforgettably in my memory.

“He took over Dumbledore from my father, which was fitting as he over took Brando as my father’s favourite actor.”
