On Wednesday, TIME magazine named Taylor Swift as their 2023 Person of the Year.
The award goes to an event or person deemed to have had the most influence on global events over the past year.
Since 1927, TIME has chosen a Person of the Year, the editors’ assessment of the individual who most shaped the headlines over the previous 12 months, for better or for worse.
Swift is the first musician to be named Person of the Year for success as an entertainer.
“In a divided world, where too many institutions are failing, Taylor Swift found a way to transcend borders and be a source of light” the magazine said in announcing the honor.
“While her popularity has grown across the decades, this is the year that Swift, 33, achieved a kind of nuclear fusion: shooting art and commerce together to release an energy of historic force,” it added.
TIME described the 33-year-old pop superstar as “a symbol of generational change”.
2023 was marked by Swift’s domination over the global music atmosphere.
Swift won nine awards at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards, and received six Grammy nominations.
She embarked on the Eras Tour in March, and its North American leg broke the record for ticket sales, grossing about $2.2 billion.
A concert film of the tour, released to theaters worldwide on October 13, became the highest-grossing concert film ever.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour collected about $96 million at the box office in the United States and Canada.
Last week, Spotify revealed that Swift is the streaming platform’s most-streamed artist of the year.
