Loose Women: Matthew Wolfenden tears up over leaving Emmerdale

Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden joined the Loose Women panel today, where he got emotional and choked up about filming his exit scenes.

Coleen Nolan asked the ITV star: “It must’ve been so hard for you to say goodbye?”

Matthew, who was getting emotional, explained: “It was, it was only two weeks ago and it was so emotional to say goodbye to particularly Joe Warren who plays Jacob.

“He has grown up with me, he started when he was seven and he is 21 now and he has grown up and I have seen him through some hard times in his life…

“You can hear it in my voice now how emotional, really emotional to kind of leave him and I do feel like he is a fourth son of mine, so yeah it was really emotional two weeks ago.”

Matthew also discussed the chance of going back in the future and said: “There’s always a chance [I could be killed off]… you never know what is gonna happen, but David doesn’t die.

“There is always a chance though to go back, who knows. I love it there, it was the best 18 years.

“I know it’s a cliché but we’re a family and all my best mates are there. The cast, the crew… So never say never, but I need to do a bit of theatre.”

It was claimed that Matthew decided to leave the ITV soap due to lack of “gritty” storylines for his character.

A source told The Sun: “Matthew has had an amazing time on the soap, but feels ready for a change.

“He hasn’t been getting any gritty storylines recently so wants to see what else is out there. He’s only just announced he is leaving so scriptwriters are working out his on-screen exit. It’s possible David could be killed off.”

Matthew is following in the footsteps of his former co-star and wife Charley Webb after she quit the soap back in 2021.

Emmerdale airs weeknights from 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
