Happy Valley and Trigger Point stars team up for gritty new ITV thriller about witness protection | The Sun

A TRIO of critically acclaimed actresses have all signed up to appear in a gritty new ITV thriller series.

Leading ladies Siobhan Finneran, Katherine Kelly and Nadine Marshall will all appear in the new drama about the perils of the UK witness protection scheme.


Titled Protection, the show will debut on ITV1 next year as well as streaming on ITVX with production already having kicked off in Liverpool.

The programme will be based on the real life testimony of a Met police officer who was a witness protection specalist for 30 years.

Happy Valley star Siobhan will head up the cast in the role of Detective Inspector Liz Nyles where she will be caught up in the tough world of the witness protection scheme.

Liz finds herself at the heart of a system break down which is made even more complex by her affair with a collegue.

However, Liz finds herself pushing forward as she sets her sights on uncovering the corruption within her unit.

Navigating the morally-grey, clandestine world of witness protection, Liz’s mission to find the truth will take her deep into the heart of the criminal underbelly and beyond as she becomes more and more torn between caring for her family, her loyalty to her lover and her duty as a police officer.

Ex-Coronation Street star and ITV drama mainstay Katherine Kelly will co-star alongside Trigger Point's Nadine Marshall.

Additional casting includes Barry Ward (Bad Sisters), Chaneil Kular (Sex Education), David Hayman (Sid and Nancy), Nichola Burley (The Gold) and Akiya Henry (Silent Witness).

The six-part series has been commissioned by the channel's Head of Drama, Polly Hill.

Speaking about the upcoming show, she said: “The clandestine world of witness protection creates a thrilling backdrop for this intriguing crime thriller written brilliantly by Kris Mrska.

"We’ve attracted an amazing cast including Siobhan Finneran, Nadine Marshall and Katherine Kelly and I’m delighted to commission the series from Willow Grylls and her team at New Pictures.”
