Invincible’s Steven Yeun has the ‘hardest job’ in season 2 and beyond

Invincible – Season 2 official trailer on Prime Video

Invincible season two is finally starting this week on Prime Video, and Steven Yeun, JK Simmons, Sandra Oh and many more are returning to The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman’s gripping comic book universe.

Express.co.uk recently had the chance to talk to Kirkman and co-showrunner Simon Racioppa about the show’s return and what lies ahead for Yeun’s Mark Grayson/Invincible.

When asked who among the cast has the hardest job, Kirkman quickly responded: “Oh, Steven Yeun by far.

“I can’t talk about it too much without spoiling things… he’s doing all the heavy lifting.

“His recording sessions are the longest recording sessions. He’s having to do a wide range of things.”

Plans are already in place for Invincible’s confirmed third season, which will undoubtedly feature even more world-ending threats and personal trials for Yeun’s determined hero.

Details about Mark’s upcoming battles are being kept under wraps, but the Nope star remains the highlight of the series which is once again pulling in stellar reviews for its next outing.

“In the back-half of season two and into season three [it’s] a wider range than you can even imagine, based on everything you’ve already seen,” Kirkman teased.

“[Yeun] handles it all so well. And he does so much preparation and is so keyed into this character and the long-term arc of this character.

“It’s like a masterclass in how to be the lead of a show. It’s an amazing body of work, and I hope when the show completes people will recognise everything that he’s put in the role.”

Racioppa also gave us some insight into how much careful thought Yeun puts into each episode.

“We talk about the individual scenes,” he said. “Let’s talk about Mark and the scene, he’s coming in and he’s feeling really vulnerable because obviously this happened and that happened.

“Steven’s like, ‘Oh, I get that’. We’ll talk about the fact he’s 19 – he’s not an adult, but he’s a young man, so sometimes his responses are different to what a 40-year-old’s would be.”

Although Yeun has the tough task of carrying Mark’s story on his shoulders, Racioppa gave a shout-out to Ross Marquand, who portrays Rudy/Robot, The Immortal and several other characters.

“He’s playing Rudy now, Robot,” he explained. “But he has to play him in the voice of a young Jason Mantzoukas because that’s the body he cloned.

“But with the cadence of Zachary Quinto, in a way. So he’s sort of interpreting three characters into a new character. And is incredible at it.

“He’s probably the one the wheels have to go around the fastest to figure out exactly how he’s approaching scenes and stuff like that.”

The showrunners are hopeful the second season will receive an equally warm reception so, eventually, Prime Video can adapt Kirkman’s full 144-issue run of Invincible.

Plus, Racioppa teased more one-off specials, like this summer’s Atom Eve episode starring Gillian Jacobs, could also be in the works for other characters in the Invincible universe.

Invincible season 2 premieres Friday, November 3 on Prime Video, with new episodes airing weekly.
